Hip Dips: What Causes Them and How a Liquid BBL Smooths Them

Hip Dips: What Causes Them and How a Liquid BBL Smooths Them

You've done the side lunges. The resistance bands. The 30-day hip dip challenges that promised to "fill out" your silhouette. And the dips are still there — because every one of those videos skipped the part where hip dips aren't a muscle problem.

Hip dips are indentations along the outer hip caused by your bone structure — specifically, the distance between your pelvis and hip socket — and how fat and muscle distribute around it. Because they're structural, exercise alone rarely removes them. A liquid BBL smooths hip dips by restoring volume directly in the indentation, creating a continuous curve from waist to thigh without surgery.

Here's what's actually going on, and what your real options are.

What Causes Hip Dips?

The dip appears where your hip bone sits relative to your femur. If there's more distance between your pelvis and hip socket, the soft tissue in between naturally curves inward. How visible it is comes down to three things: your bone structure, where your body genetically stores fat, and how much muscle sits over the area.

That's why two women with identical workout routines can have completely different hip lines — and why hip dips show up on lean bodies, curvy bodies, athletic bodies, all bodies. Roughly speaking, they're one of the most common "concerns" we see, and one of the most misunderstood.

Can You Get Rid of Hip Dips With Exercise?

Ultimately, no — and here’s why.

The muscle underneath your hip dip (the gluteus medius) is relatively thin, and no exercise directs fat to a specific spot on your body. Spot-reduction is a myth in reverse, too: you can't spot-add. Squats and side lunges build overall glute muscle, which is great for strength and shape — but they can't fill an indentation created by your skeleton.

Weight gain doesn't reliably fix it either, since your genetics decide where new fat goes. Some women gain everywhere except the dip, which deepens the contrast.

None of this means stop training glutes. It means if the dip itself bothers you, the fix isn't in the gym — it's a volume problem, and volume problems have a volume solution.

How a Liquid BBL Smooths Hip Dips

A liquid BBL uses injectable filler — placed precisely into the indentation to restore the curve your bone structure interrupted.

For hip dips specifically, this is one of the most satisfying treatments we perform, because the goal is so well-defined: fill the dip until the line from waist to thigh reads as one continuous curve. No implants, no fat harvesting, no anesthesia, no surgical recovery. The treatment is done in-office, and most patients are back to normal life the same day — up and walking immediately.

A few things your provider will map at your consultation:

  • How deep the dips are — deeper indentations need more product, placed in layers, sometimes across more than one session

  • Your surrounding shape — filling the dip alone versus adding projection to the buttock changes how much product and which placement makes sense

  • Symmetry — most bodies dip more on one side; we believe in treating each side individually rather than mirroring blindly

Results are visible immediately, settle fully over a few weeks, and depending on the product used, last one to two years or longer — with collagen-stimulating fillers, your body builds its own structure in the area over time.

Hip Dips vs. Full Liquid BBL: What's the Difference?

Same technique, different scope. A full liquid BBL adds volume and projection throughout the buttocks. Hip dip treatment is targeted — it can be done on its own if your only concern is the dip, or combined with fuller contouring if you want overall shape enhancement. Plenty of our patients do dips-only: less product, lower cost, subtler change, and nobody can point to what's different. They just see a smoother line.

If you've recently lost weight — especially quickly, on a GLP-1 medication — this distinction matters more. Rapid weight loss often deepens hip dips while flattening the buttock overall, in which case treating the dip alone can leave the result looking incomplete. That's a consultation conversation, not a menu decision.

Is Hip Dip Filler Safe?

Before booking anywhere, confirm you're seeing a licensed medical provider, ask what product is being injected, and expect a real medical consultation before anyone quotes you a price. If those steps are missed, it’s time to walk away.

FAQs

Does hip dip filler hurt?
Discomfort is mild — the area is numbed first, and most patients describe pressure more than pain.

How much filler do hip dips need?
It varies widely with depth and body size, which is why we assess in person before quoting. Beware anyone who prices it sight unseen.

Will the results look natural?
That's the entire point of treating dips: you're not adding a new shape, you're completing an existing line. It's among the most undetectable body treatments there is.

Can I work out afterward?
Light activity right away; most providers recommend a short pause on intense lower-body training while the filler settles. You'll get specific timelines at your visit.

Your Curves Were Never the Problem

Hip dips aren't a flaw and they were never something you failed to fix. But if yours bother you every time you get dressed, you don't have to squat your way toward a solution that anatomy won't allow. Book a consultation here at NuVeé Aesthetics — your provider will look at your shape, tell you honestly whether targeted filler or fuller contouring fits your goals, and build the plan around you.
